Home Art: Creating Romance and Magic With Everyday Objects
Published in Hardcover by Bulfinch Press (October, 1994)
Authors: Judyth Van Amringe and Andrew Garn
Average review score:

An eye-openingly wonderful insight into creativity!
Imaginative, intelligently-written and a comfortable glide into the wackier extremes of home decor...what an inspiring book. I doubt that EVERY project will appeal to the reader, but ALL of them display a thinking-out-of-box quality that will help inspire the reader into making their own home into a very personal expression of fresh decor. Enjoy!

A creative treasure trove of home interior design "do-ables"
I own stacks of decorating, interior design and painting technique books, but none come even close to the wit and personality of Judyth Van Amringe's inspired volume "Home Art". The moment I set eyes on the deliciously painted and tufted couch on the cover of her book, I was hooked. With an armload of practical tips, Van Amringe challenges you to look beyond the "tried and true" interior designs tips. From lampshades strewn with silky fabric roses to the handpainted "Barnacle Table", you will find nothing here but pure inpiration and delight. Admittedly, some of the projects may not be your cup 'o tea, but rest assured, once inside the pages of this book, you will be hard pressed not to throw it down in search of something to paint, glue or stitch. This is must-have book...beg, borrow or steal, this is one for your shelves!!

The Home Environmental Sourcebook: 50 Environmental Hazards to Avoid When Buying, Selling, or Maintaining a Home
Published in Paperback by Henry Holt & Company, Inc. (January, 1997)
Authors: Andrew N., Phd Davis, Paul Schaffman, and Paul Shcaffman
Average review score:

Helpful, Hands-On Guide to Evaluating Environmental Issues
I recently purchased my first home and had so many headaches to deal with just on the basics of the transaction, I wasn't initially sure how to address possible environmental issues or where I would find the time to figure them all out. The Home Environmental Sourcebook, with its practical, well-organized and easy to understand information, solved my dilemma. It allowed me to investigate environmental issues of particular concern (e.g., lead paint, asbestos) quickly by providing concise information by topic area and letting me know where else I could find more detailed information. The book was also helpful in that a quick scan of topics covered in the book helped identify issues which I hadn't been considering, but which were ultimately important not only in my decision-making process, but in the very negotiation of the purchase contract. Highly recommended.

Renovator Recommends "Home Environmental Sourcebook"
I recommend this book to everyone in the renovation field. The content on older homes is very important in limiting future liability and callbacks. The chapters on lead paint and asbestos alone could save the contractor thousands of times the cost of the book

Horses in Midstream: U. S. Midterm Elections and Their Consequences, 1894-1998
Published in Hardcover by Univ of Pittsburgh Pr (Txt) (September, 1999)
Author: Andrew E. Busch
Average review score:

Great Study of Obscure Subject
Midterm elections are a lot more than just the ugly stepchild of American politics. They are an important feature that (with three exceptions since 1894)have consistently hurt the president and his agenda in one way or another. Why does the president's party almost always lose ground in Congress in midterm elections? And what are the short- and long-term effects of midterms?

In this book, Busch takes at look at every midterm election from 1894 to the present. He then divides each midterm election into one of four categories: the preparatories (1894, 1910, 1918, 1930, 1950, 1958, 1966, and 1978) in which the opposition party gained seats in Congress and set the stage for their winning the White House two years later, the calibrating elections, (1938, 1982, 1986) which forced the president to moderate his agenda, but didn't reverse it, the exceptions (1934, 1962, and 1998)in which the party holding the White House gained the advantages usually gained by their opponents, and the normal midterms (somewhat surprisingly, 1994 is in this category).

Midterm elections have many important effects besides just damaging the president, as Busch notes. For example, the 1946 elections and the subsequent GOP Congress established bipartisan support for an activist foreign policy that is still, for the most part, with us today.

Don't let my summary fool you. Busch goes into great depth (for example, he even shows that the president usually suffers damage within his own party i.e. many of the Democrats who survived the 1894 elections were silverities and thus Cleveland's enemies) about an important topic.

An excellent study of the results of midterms
Professor Busch pens a superb book that deals with a topic that few other political scientists have written on: the results of midterm elections. Prof. Busch looks at each midterm election since 1894 (up to 1998) and classifies them, finally explaining their results. It is an excellent book, and is a must for anyone trying to understand what midterm elections mean to our republican government.

Howard Hodgkin
Published in Paperback by Thames and Hudson Ltd (04 July, 1994)
Author: Andrew Graham-Dixon
Average review score:

A readable, sensitive and comprehensive treatment of Hodgkin
The very dust-jacket with its dynamic detail from Hodgkin's Old Sky strikes the right note in this intelligently presented and visually seductive review of the painter's career. The excellent quality of the illustrations, their logical placing directly opposite the pertinent text, marginal page references, the choice of type-face and the luxury-feel paper all make the mere handling of the book a real pleasure.
Far from being of mere coffee-table appeal, however, the author's cool authoritative voice makes one feel that here is a critic in whose hands one is safe. Such a gem of wisdom as 'whatever residue of inexplicability lodges in a work of art is also its only hope of an afterlife' establishes his impeccable credentials as a discerning critic. Graham-Dixon deals with Hodgkin's seminal influences, his eclecticism, his evolving theatrical style, his preoccupation with the vagaries of memory and its transmutation into art. 'Hodgkin does not set out to paint what the world looks like, but what it feels like.' His work has the quality of intimacy which makes its own demands on the viewer who would engage with it, Graham-Dixon observes in a book which is lucid and comprehensive without ever wearying the reader.

A passionate and scholarly study of Hodgkin.
Andrew Graham-Dixon's passionate book about the work of Howard Hodgkin, has the detail and insight serious students of this important artist want. This book is as the first monograph to be published on this artist,a very important purchase. If like me you thirst for really good reproduction, the colour plates are large and do justice to the paintings.

I Wasn't Kidding
Published in Paperback by Ballantine Books (Trd Pap) (March, 1984)
Author: Andrew Christie
Average review score:

Perfect reverse psychology gift for your miserable friends
This is a very witty (and sick) collection of cartoons about ways to commit suicide. This is the perfect gift for a miserable friend who needs to snap out of it. I lost this book about a year ago and I can't believe its out of print now. We need more of Andrew Christie's wicked mind to keep us sane.

Incredible, over-the-top uniqu dark humor and illustrations
Why on earth did this book go out of print? It's just what we need to get the run-of-the-mill out of millenium. Every time I show this mind-warping rare classic to friends they say, This is the perfect alternative to therapy! Where can I get this? Unique, one of a kind, extraordinary humor with artistically simpatico drawings.

Idaho the Whitewater State
Published in Paperback by Watershed Books (June, 2003)
Authors: Grant Amaral, Laura Andrews, Doug Ammons, and Mary Williams
Average review score:

This Book is the Bible for Kayaking in Idaho
The only book you should even consider buying for paddling Idaho. The only negative is that grant seems to under estimate some of the shuttles. Watch out for that.

If you want to boat in Idaho you need this book !
This book is as complete as you can find when it comes to Idaho White Water. Grant Amaral has done an outstanding job with this guide. Buy it, you won't be sorry. As a matter of fact, you will be sorry if you don't because there is no other like it.

Excellently written account of the Great War!
Andy Wiest's The Illustrated History of World War I is a thorough, yet easy to read book on one of the most cataclysmic events of the 20th century. Wiest's superb writing skills combined with stunning black and white pictures, and maps bring the Great War to life. Wiest does an excellent job of explaining a complicated subject in a manner in which is easy to understand. Well worth the price! I reccomend it to anyone who is looking for a good history of the Great War.

A Wonderful Book
What a clear, well written account of World War I. It makes this momentous event real and immediate to the reader. The pictures and captions add so much. No one can go wrong with this literate account of a noble and terrible time in world history.

Illustrator 7
Published in CD-ROM by Delmar Learning (08 December, 1997)
Authors: Delmar Publishers and Andrew J. Hathaway
Average review score:

It's almost like having a personal tutor
This cd is so much better than training yourself by reading book on the subject. The course is clear and easy. And the narrator's voice is not irritating at all. (he also doesn't make stupid jokes that some authors like to stick in their books to make them lengthier.

VTC Training CDs - The Easiest Way To Learn!
As a professional designer and instructor, I have to learn new applications all the time. These training CDs are the very best way to get up to production speed quickly. The QuickTime Movie tutorials make it easy to go back and review any lesson and skip around to the topics that interest me most. The Illustrator CD is a real winner - I highly recommend it!
